Wahoo

WAHOO

Acanthocybium solandri

RECORD:  56.75KG,  B. Gaudino, 2002, Mexico.

Wahoo I think is a Hawian name . It is also the sound spearos make as they shaft their first one of these. Another incredible looking tropical fish , wahoo are famous for there great burst of speed when hooked or speared. Like mahi they are an ocean wanderer but are also commonly encountered on reef edges close to deep water. Usually swimming close to the surface it is easy for the diver to miss seeing them as we tend to be looking down and not across. It is essential to get used to the surface method of hunting for wahoo . Look outwards not down. They are readily attracted to burley but can also be very wary of divers , maintaining a 10 meter separation for there own safety. The tropical open seas are an incredibly dangerous place for any fish and their behavior reflects this super predatory environment. Swimming slowly towards them and diving to a position below them will often have them cruise in slowly for a look. Take the shot when you get the chance as they seldom come back for a 2nd look

The flesh is super soft and tears easily , combine this with huge power and they can be a difficult fish to hold .I recommend sliptips.

If there is a better tasting fish I have yet to try it.
