Mask Fit

Hi,

Currently I am using a mask that I purchased from a dive store years ago, how ever my face has seemed to changed and it now creates an irratating amount of pressure on my nose between my eyes. Also now that I can dive a little deeper, up to 15m, I have to equalise my mask several times to get down there. The mask is quite large and I suspect that this has something to do with the problems. I'm looking at buying a new mask to hopfully eliminate these problems. Would you have any suggestions as to what mask to purchace?

Thanks, Tom.

Hi Tom,

As with most bits of dive kit mask fit is paramount.

Diving to 15m you are definitely going to need to equalize your mask several times (I equalize my mask every time I equalize my ears). The amount of internal volume of your mask will dictate how much air it takes. For this reason most freedivers use very low-volume masks.

Feeling pressure on the bridge of your nose is relatively common. The mask I have found that usually solves this problem is the Cressi Matrix. This is a very high quality mask that has exceptional field of vision yet still has very low internal volume. It is also the mask that three out of three Wild Blue staff members use. I think that this would be a good place to start but of course if you receive the mask and it doesn’t work for you we can keep swapping it until we find one that does. The second mask I’d try would be the Effesub Fuegos.

Hope this helps.
