Aitutaki

AITUTAKI

Located 100km north of Rarotonga, Aitutaki lagoon covers 12,000 acres fringed by pristine coral reefs which plunge 4000m to the bottom of the Pacific. The clear, blue waters play host to an array of fish life and the wide variety of species and terrain are a spear fisherman’s paradise.

Following a very successful preliminary trips in 2007 Wild Blue is proud to open up Aitutaki as a world class destination for NZ spearos. Guided by local game fishing charter operator and professional spear fisherman, Mike of Black Pearl Charters, we spent five days on Aitutaki. During this time we dived in the shallows under the breakers, amongst deep bommies, off walls and on the three FADs set-up by the Cook Islands government. We landed wahoo, dog-tooth tuna, mahi mahi, parrots, wrasse, snapper, barracuda…and it wasn’t even game season!!

Mike’s boat, The Black Pearl, is a 7.5m aluminium boat purpose built in NZ for the tropical environment. Powered by an ultra-reliable, 115hp Yamaha it was the perfect platform for our adventure with duck boards on the back and plenty of chilly-bins and ice for the days catch and lunch.

The weather in Aitutaki is typical of most tropical destinations with temperatures in the high twenties and an equal mix of sunshine and rain. The water temperature is usually around a balmy 27 degrees making a 3mm top and lycra pants the ideal outfit.

Accommodation is a basic two bedroom house with all the essentials and no extras, perfect for divers.

From Auckland a 4 hour flight gets you to Rarotonga and another hours connecting flight to Aitutaki.

We are now taking bookings for trips in May and July 2009.  Each trip has 5 days diving and there are only 6 seats each so get in quick. The price is $2500 for flights, accommodation and boat hire but will be slightly more if it goes during school holidays. Anybody interested should contact us for an information pack.
